Urgent help
HG can be very harmful to your physical and mental health. It's important to reach out to your support people, Lead Maternity Carer (LMC) or other healthcare providers so that they can provide or refer you to appropriate support.
If you are having a mental health crisis and need urgent support:
- contact your LMC; or
- go to the nearest hospital emergency department; or
- call emergency services (dial 111) for immediate assistance.
Our guidance document has detailed information on how to seek support for your physical and mental health.
Additional help
If you think your Lead Maternity Carer is not providing you with adequate care, you can change to a new one at any time.
In some areas there are severe shortages of LMCs and you may have difficulty finding another one. The Health and Disability Commissioner Advocacy service can help you resolve issues you are having with your LMC. They will provide you with advice and assistance to help you find a more suitable LMC or address issues with the care you are receiving.
If you find that you still need more assistance, you can get in contact with us at hgadvocacynz@gmail.com. We can engage with you, and your LMC if you choose, to find a solution.
Your rights
In New Zealand, patients have a range of healthcare rights which the Health and Disability Commissioner has summarised in their ‘Patient Rights’ poster. You have a right to adequate care and information on treatment options. As a patient, you do not have to accept sub-standard care.
